Food is Art!

Among my many passions cooking is at near the top. Perhaps that is what appeals to me about food photography. While no chef myself, I have spent enough years in the kitchen to appreciate the talents of great chefs; I have gained an appreciation for the skill and imagination required to create great food...and present it beautifully.

When I see someone with great culinary talents make art from seemingly random components, I am drawn to the opportunity to capture what has now, to me, become art. And, frequently, when I have accomplished that task, I get to eat my work.

Capturing the essence of fine food, and the nuance and elegance of its presentation, requires the same dedication to photographic craft as a fine portrait. Food photography, styling, "posing" and lighting a chef's "children", his prized culinary offspring, is a unique photographic specialty. For most of my life I have enjoyed cooking, entertaining and fine dining. But it was when I got my first assignment photographing food over 7 years ago that I really began to appreciate the high art form that food had become.

Today when I begin a food photography project I have a single goal: create a photographic work of art that does proud the efforts of the real artist, the chef. And then, if I am lucky enough, I eat the fruits of my labor. Bon Appétit.
